Mecklenburg-Vorpommern 2026 Odds on Polymarket: The SPD Flip

Polymarket's market on who wins the most seats in Sunday's Mecklenburg-Vorpommern state election priced AfD an 83.5c favorite as recently as Tuesday, September 15, 2026 - more than five times the party's 2021 vote share, and consistent with a year of polling that had AfD comfortably leading Germany's northeastern state. Two late polls broke that lead inside sixteen hours: an Insa survey published Wednesday evening narrowed AfD's edge to two points, and a Forschungsgruppe Wahlen poll for ZDF published this morning, September 18, put the governing SPD ahead for the first time all cycle, 37% to 36%. Polymarket's AfD contract now sits at 48.5c against SPD's 51.0c - a genuine coin flip two days before voters go to the polls. Numbers below are from Gamma and the CLOB, fetched 2026-09-18 11:31 UTC.

01The race AfD was supposed to win

A safe assumption, right up until Thursday

Mecklenburg-Vorpommern's outgoing Landtag is the SPD's to lose only on paper. Minister-President Manuela Schwesig's SPD won 39.6% of the vote in 2021 and governs in coalition with Die Linke, while AfD placed a distant second at 16.7%. This cycle flipped that script: a pollytix poll fielded September 8-9 had AfD at 36% (+19 points versus 2021) against SPD's 30% (-10 points), a lead AfD had held through most of 2026 while expanding across formerly SPD-held ground in eastern Germany. Sunday's vote also lands the same day as Berlin's state election, two weeks after AfD's landslide in neighboring Saxony-Anhalt - a run of eastern German results that had made an AfD plurality here look like the safe assumption. Polymarket's "Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Parliamentary Election Winner" market - which resolves to whichever party wins the most of the 71 Landtag seats up for election Sunday, September 20 - had priced that assumption as durable: AfD's "wins the most seats" contract sat flat at 83.5c from at least Tuesday, September 15 through Wednesday afternoon, while SPD's held near 15.5c.

The trend was already visible poll to poll before Polymarket moved at all. pollytix had AfD ahead 36-30 on September 8-9 fieldwork; Insa narrowed that to 36-33 in its September 10 survey, then to 37-35 in the round it published the evening of September 17; and Forschungsgruppe Wahlen's September 14-17 fieldwork, published Thursday morning, put SPD in front for the first time, 37-36. Four surveys, four narrower AfD leads in a row - and Polymarket's price didn't budge on the first three.

02The chart

It moved hard on the fourth poll, and the one before it

Polymarket's Mecklenburg-Vorpommern election winner market: AfD's chance of winning the most seats fell from 83.5c on September 15 to 48.5c by September 18, while SPD's rose from 15.5c to 51.5c, driven by two late polls showing the race tightening then flipping. 20c 40c 60c 80c Sep 15 12:00 Sep 16 11:49 Sep 17 11:38 Sep 18 11:28 INSA: AFD 37/SPD 35 FGW: SPD 37/AFD 36 AfD SPD AfD 48.5c SPD 51.5c

At 19:50 UTC on Wednesday, September 17, as the Insa poll circulated, AfD's contract fell from 75.5c to 56.0c in ten minutes while SPD's jumped from 22.5c to 41.5c; both settled into a 58-61c/38-42c band overnight, further than the two-point poll gap alone would suggest - the market had been pricing far more AfD confidence than the surveys had justified for at least a week. Then, as the Forschungsgruppe Wahlen poll broke around 03:00 UTC Thursday, AfD's contract dropped from 54.5c to 49.0c inside ten minutes, with SPD's rising the same 6.5 points to match. Both kept drifting for another five hours - AfD to a 39.5c low, SPD to a 60c high, between 06:40 and 08:20 UTC - before partly reversing back toward the current 48.5c/51.0c split by mid-morning.

03What's priced now

A coin flip, two days out

MV ELECTION: MOST SEATS YES 24H
AfD 48.5c -25pt
SPD 51.0c +24.5pt
CDU/Grüne/Linke/FDP/BSW 0.05c flat

AfD's contract has traded down 25 points over the past 24 hours (73.5c to 48.5c) against a 24.5-point rise for SPD (26.5c to 51.0c), on an event that's traded $391,672 over the same window against $636,292 of resting liquidity. Both sides carry real size at the touch: AfD's book shows 2,041 shares bid at 48c against 1,686 offered at 49c, a 1c-wide market, while SPD's is wider at 2c - 110 shares bid at 50c against 1,028 offered at 52c - AfD's side has tightened faster than SPD's since the flip.

Every other party on this twelve-way market - CDU, the Greens, Die Linke, the FDP, BSW - is priced at 0.05c to win the most seats; Polymarket has treated this as a pure AfD-versus-SPD contest since the market opened in February, and neither poll changed that read. The closer contest Sunday is who clears the Landtag's 5% threshold at all: Thursday's ZDF poll had BSW at 4%, below the cutoff, and CDU - once the state's second-largest party - at just 6%, its weakest showing in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern since reunification. If either falls out of parliament, the seat math shifts in ways this binary market doesn't price. A result either way would be notable: an AfD plurality would be the party's first anywhere in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern's history, while an SPD win would extend Schwesig's run past a flip more than one late poll suggested was still possible earlier this month.

Sunday's vote will settle the number that actually matters, but between now and then, polymarket-tui keeps this ladder's price and the order book that's pricing it on one screen - useful for watching a race move 25 points overnight without refreshing a browser tab.
